Webinar Conversation

I sit at my favorite coffee shop, staring at the screen of my laptop, participating in a free webinar (and phone call) regarding the exploration of entrepreneurship. As the mediator asks for stories from any of the meeting attendees through the headphones I have connected to my phone, I turn the mute off and begin to hear myself talk:

"Hi, this is Mandy in central Oregon... Well, I guess I am a bit of a young professional: I will be turning thirty this year. I've been a civil engineer for about ten years, until my recent lay-off.

My career was very much my identity, and since I've lost it, I'm researching different options at this point. I am interested in the idea of pursuing my own business opportunity. I have many friends who have owned or presently own their own businesses: family friends, acquaintances, and even my husband, who had his own drywall construction business until just recently. I was also lucky enough to watch two close friends go through the entire process of opening their own brewery last year, from finding funding sources a couple of years ago... to the day-to-day managing of the restaurant business presently...

So... well, I guess I'm here to research the idea of trying something new, something maybe different, that could create a new identity for myself..."
