Lost Communication?

I sit at a high bistro table in a local wine shop/tasting bar, having a glass of the Italian di Lenardo Pinot Grigio, enjoying the light fruity flavor, full bodied wine. It has a nice fruit finish, and I can't help thinking that Scott would be jealous if he knew where I was, he loves a good wine as well. But he is home with a friend, fixing some of the cabinet faces for the kitchen. Poor thing, I won't tell him I'm here. But wait, he reads the blog. Hmph.

Above the small, market-place setting of this wine shop is a dance studio. And I see a couple and their young daughter make their way up the metal stairs for her practice. The mother leads the family, a cell phone in her hand and pressed to her ear. The young daughter, clad in an adorable pink dance outfit follows her. The husband follows the daughter, his own cell phone up to his own ear.

I dearly hope that our lives haven't become this detached. Remember when cell phones were only an emergency device attached to our car consoles? I can even recall the times in life when my mom would need to get a hold of my dad at work. Did she use a cell phone? Hardly. From our house land line, she messaged his BEEPER to page him, and then he had to find a phone to call her back. And that was only after my dad's company joined the rest of the world in technology.

Life has evolved, and I must be showing my age. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the advancement in technology. Scott is hardly off his iPod Touch, not with all the games, songs, and other downloads. Not to mention the streaming internet and such. Connor even finds himself playing some of the games that Scott downloaded for him.. Also, like I said, I sit in this wine shop, my Blackberry Storm chiming when I receive emails or text messages, while my laptop is streaming the Internet with my mobile broadband device. I love having any and all information at my fingertips.

But I don't enjoy the detachment that it can all but cause. Tonight, I think that Scott, Connor and I are going to play a game or two of Candyland. It's probably been awhile.

Ah yes, technology. The means to keep in touch without the human touch. Good pics of your trip!

Love you!
